So Big, So Wild

So Big, So Wild
Visit the vast unspoiled north "western" frontier of Pennsylvania home to the mighty Allegheny National Forest, over 500,000 acres of outdoor fun. You will discover something exciting to do every season of the year. Fishing, hunting, horseback riding, cross-country skiing & snowshoeing, hiking & biking, camping, and boating. Outdoor adventure awaits you here in the forest.

Make Tracks...
Cross-country Skiing & Snowshoeing
The word is out…our region provides significant natural snow coverage for a network of trails. The Westline Cross-Country Ski area is a favorite for scenic vistas. Wildlife is abundant so remember to watch for turkey, deer, squirrels, and birds, especially along Thundershower Run and its headwaters. This 15.6 kilometer (9.8 mile) ungroomed trail system is specifically designed for the enjoyment of X-C skiers of all skill levels. Do the Short-Circuit Loop, Inside-Out or Boo-Boo's Delight. Ledges Loop and the Thundershower Trail offer the most experienced skiers a beautiful view of Thundershower Run as it flows into Westline. Westline, a small village once know for its sawmill and two railroads, is now recognized as a local landmark for the fine cuisine of the Westline Inn. Downhill skiing is conveniently located nearby at Holiday Valley. Trail maps, ski packages are available.

Kinzua-"Land of Many and Big Fishes"
Once home to the Seneca Nation of Native Americans, this land named "Kinzua" still features an abundance of record-breaking catches. The Allegheny Reservoir produced the New York and Pennsylvania State record for Walleye. "Best Walleye water in the Northeast, outside of the Great Lakes", according to one experienced angler. Great angling adventures await you at the reservoir or in any of the hundred of miles of streams nestled in the forest. From the large tailwater fishery at the base of the Kinzua Dam, tiny Brook Trout streams on the Allegheny Plateau, to Kinzua Creek, the choice is yours. Grey Fox, March Brown, Green Drakes, and native brown trout are found in these waters. "The Pink Ugly" a famous fly-fishing lure was invented here. How serious are we about fishing? The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford hosts the annual Kinzua Fly Fishing School!

Hunting
The Allegheny National Forest is open to hunting during legal seasons, as are the State Game lands # 62, 61 & 30 located in McKean County. Check the record books of the Pennsylvania Game Commission; McKean County boosts 4 out of the 25 all time "Big Buck Trophies", more than any other County in Pennsylvania. Duck hunting, turkey hunting, upland bird, deer and black bear, we're not talking turkey this is a hunters paradise.

Take a Hike

Take A Hike

Tie on your hiking boots and go for a walk. It's great to be able to enjoy the outdoors with a romp through the woods. For variety and size nothing beats our trail system: Hiking-16 trails: 236.7 miles, Cross Country Skiing-8 trails: 54 miles, Interpretive-9 trails: 14 miles, North Country Trail-86.8 miles. The North Country Trail provides the experienced hiker/backpacker with a unique opportunity to hike from the Willow Bay Recreation Area through the forest to Seldom Seen Corners. Marked with white blazes, this section of North Country Trail is part of the largest trail system in the United States.

Snowmobiling
Allegheny Snowmobile Loop -"Do the Loop" over 360 miles of groomed trails winding through the lush forests of the Allegheny National Forest (ANF). One of the largest and most scenic trails on the East Coast. McKean County holds the state records for the most snow and coldest temperature in the State, when others don't have snow we do!

Snowmobile season in the Allegheny National Forest on designated routes only, from Dec. 20 to April 1. The towns of Kane, Westline, Lantz Corners and Marshburg all provide convenient access to trailheads. Call ahead for snow conditions, or request to be linked to our seasonal e-mail updates on current snow conditions.
